Electron Crystallography Workshop 2006

Aims =============================================================================

The workshop on membrane protein 2D crystallization and electron crystallography is aimed at PhD students and PostDocs, who are interested in the structure determination of membrane proteins by electron crystallography.

Topics =============================================================================

This workshop will cover all aspects of electron crystallography, including:

  • Membrane protein crystallization Sample preparation for electron microscopy Data collection by cryo-EM and electron diffraction Computer image processing, with several software systems (MRC, 2dx, IPLT) Data evaluation and model building

This workshop will introduce the new software systems IPLT and 2dx, and will also teach using the MRC programs.

Students will learn how to process 2D crystal images in 2dx, and how to process electron diffraction patterns in IPLT.

Dates ============================================================================= Workshop: August 7-11, 2006 (Monday-Friday) Arrival: Sunday, 8/6/2006. Departure: Saturday, 8/12/2006

Program =============================================================================

The workshop will be divided into four blocks: Lectures (morning), hands-on practicals (afternoon), poster sessions (before dinner), and research talks (evening). See also `here`__

Registration =============================================================================

Registration is closed now.

Deadline for registration was June 1, 2006. The workshop is fully booked now. However, we might be able to accomodate a few additional participants. Please contact us if you missed the deadline but still like to participate.

The registration fee is $200 for academic and $1000 for industry applicants. These fees include lodging (double occupancy in twin rooms) and on-site meals. Funds to sponsor one or two students with limited financial means are available, upon request. Please add a comment with your registration, explaining why you wish to apply for sponsorship. Students from underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply. Please make no payment before you have been accepted for the course. The number of students is limited to 20.

Lodging ============================================================================= Accomodation is included in the registration fee for the period of August 6 through August 12, 2006. Rooms have been reserved in the `UCD Conference Housing, Tercero Area`__. Alternative lodging is available upon request.

Local Transport ============================================================================= Davis is a small, friendly University town, with the highest bicycle density in the USA. Distances from the conference housing to the lecture hall and downtown are short walking distances.

Travel ============================================================================= Travel to and from the workshop at UC Davis has to be organized by the participants. The closest airport is Sacramento Airport (SMF), with about 15 minutes driving time from UC Davis. San Francisco Airport (SFO) is about 1 hour 30 minutes from UC Davis. We recommend the `Davis Airporter`__ for transport to and from the airports.
